A remarkable women who I have only just discovered.

Born in Kingston Jamaica Mary treated victims of illness and disease in her homeland and then Panama. Upon hearing of the war in Crimea she set forth to Britain to offer her services to the British Army. There she was rejected as at the time the army was not keen on female medical staff. After the outcry of the British public over the soldier’s conditions, a nursing corps was created headed by Florence Nightingale, but again Seacol was turned down.

So Mary drove on funding her own voyage to Crimea. Upon arriving she sought out the hospital where Nightingale worked in Scutari, but again she was denied. So Mary set up her own hospital made of scrap materials just outside Savastopol. Here Mary treated the sick and ventured out to the battlefield treating men of both sides at times even whilst battle was waged. For all Mary’s work she only excepted payments from the men who could afford it. Her actions led to her becoming known as “Mother Seacole” among the men of the Crimea.

After the fighting finished she was forced to flee the Crimea for Britain from creditors after giving everything to her cause and no custom could be gained from her services. But in Britain Mary would find help in the form of several prominent people donating to a fund for her after a plea appeared in Punch magazine.

So through repeated denials based on either gender or race she strove on just to help people that needed it and that she had the skills to care for.

What a women!
